Grading criteria

The basic principle for grading the course is that you must pass all the course elements. That is, the gobbets, the exercises, the presentation, and the written exam. To get higher grades you need to collect bonus points: 10 for grade 4 (very good), 20 for grade 5 (outstanding). There are a maximum of 2 bonus points available per gobbet, and 1 for the review, and up to 7 points for the research project (5 for the writing and 2 for the presentation). The exam is marked out of 60, and 36 points are required to pass. Additional points are bonus points.

The picture illustrates the grading for the course. To pass the course you must fill all of the lightly shaded squares: at least 36 points on the exam, 3 gobbets passed, and research (writing, analysis, presentation) passed.

  • For the criteria for the gobbets, research project, and written exam, see the respective pages (links in left-hand column).
  • The available bonus points should give you a guide for how to allocate your time on the course work: gobbets 14 percent, research paper 19 percent, exam 63 percent.
  • If (after I have put together all the points from the gobbets, paper, and exam) you end up just below a grade boundary you may appeal against the grading of any element of the course.
